ROCKY RIVER — Wilmington College dropped its second straight 5-4 decision as the Lady Quakers were edged by John Carroll in Ohio Athletic Conference action at River Oaks Athletic Center Saturday afternoon.
Wilmington — which dropped a 5-4 decision to Ohio Northern on Wednesday — is now 5-3 in the OAC, 6-8 overall. John Carroll improves to 6-3 in the conference, 8-5 for the season.
“Once again, we played very well against a good team,” Wilmington head coach Jessie Loeffelholz said. “I guess 5-4 is our score this week.”
Wilmington opened the match with wins in two of the three doubles matches. Jessica VanWinkle (Vickery/Floyd Central, Ind.) and Stephanie Amrhein (Brookville, Ind./Franklin County) posted an 8-4 win over Amy Marchelon and Ashley Bauer at the No. 2 position. At No. 3 doubles, Jessica Veite (Loveland) and Michelle Reiber (Jamestown/Greeneview) were 8-4 winners over Emily Gorndt and Deanne Bouchahine.
“Our No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams played good matches,” Loeffelholz said. “They worked hard on every point. That’s what you have to do to win big matches in this conference.”
Wilmington’s singles wins were provided by Reiber and Holly Grady. Reiber posted a 7-5, 6-2 win over Athena Pappis at No. 5 and Grady (Beavercreek/Xenia Christian) was a 7-6 (11-9), 6-4 winner over Gorndt at No. 6.
“Michelle and Holly played solid matches,” Loeffelholz said. “Steph Amrhein also played well at No. 3. I don’t think the score of her match reflects how well she played against Marchlen, who is a very good player.”
Wilmington will close the regular season at Baldwin-Wallace 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
