WC ends regular season with loss at BW; OAC tourney up next

WC to open tourney at Mount Union

May 2, 2010

BEREA — Wilmington College closed out the regular season with a 9-0 loss to Ohio Athletic Conference champion Baldwin-Wallace on Sunday. The match was played indoors at Lou Higgins Recreation Center.

The Lady Quakers end the OAC regular season at 5-4 while Baldwin-Wallace finishes a perfect 9-0. Wilmington finishes in fifth place and will play at Mount Union in an OAC Championship quarterfinal match on Tuesday.

“We played well today. We worked hard and competed on every point,” Wilmington head coach Jessie Loeffelholz said. “The team did a nice job of adjusting to the indoor surface. It was a good weekend for us. We played a lot of tennis, which I think will help prepare us for our tournament match at Mount Union.”

The Yellow Jackets opened the match by sweeping doubles play. The tightest match of the day came at No. 3 doubles, where Jessica Veite (Loveland) and Michelle Reiber (Jamestown/Greeneview) were edged by Katy Marshall and Andrea Essig, 5-8.

“Our No. 3 doubles teams really played a nice match,” Loeffelholz said.

In other doubles play, Marie Granstrom (Burtrask, Vasterbotten, Sweden/Adalsskolan) and Lisa Brady (Pickerington/Pickerington North) dropped their No. 1 match to Caitlyn Pecinovsky and Rebecca Mittler. At the No. 2 position, Jessica VanWinkle (Vickery/Floyd Central, Ind.) and Stephanie Amrhein (Brookville, Ind./Franklin County) were defeated by Jenny Greene and Emily Pelosi.

“All of our doubles teams did a nice job,” Loeffelholz said. “They worked hard and stayed focused on the things that we have been working on.”

For Wilmington, the fifth-place finish represents a jump in the conference standings.

“We want to win every match we play, but we also want to improve every time we take the court,” Loeffelholz said. “I think a fifth-place finish is proof that we are improving. The OAC is an outstanding conference. When you climb the standings in this conference, you should be proud of your accomplishment.”
