WC opens with loss to Wittenberg

Veite gets win for Wilmington

Wilmington College opened the fall tennis season with an 8-1 loss to Wittenberg on the Lady Quakers’ courts Tuesday afternoon.

“For only practicing for four days, I felt the team competed very well against a very good Wittenberg team,” Wilmington head coach Jessie Loeffelholz said. “Every day, we get better. The team has a great work ethic and works hard in practice to make everyone better.”

Jessica Veite (Loveland) picked up Wilmington’s lone win. The junior was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Anne Beauch at the No. 3 singles position.

“Jessica picked up where she left off this past spring,” Loeffelholz said. “She worked hard in every point. She had a very good day.”

Veite and Michelle Reiber (Jamestown/Greeneview) had a solid match at No. 2 doubles before losing to Beauch and Emma Bilyeu, 5-8.

“Jessica and Michelle played a good match,” Loeffelholz said. “They are making the transition from No. 3 doubles. They work well together.”

In other doubles play, Jessica VanWinkle (Vickery/Floyd Central, Ind.) and Marie Granstrom (Burtrask, Vasterbotten, Sweden/Adalsskolan) dropped their No. 1 match to Leah Ann Miller and Jayne Miely, 0-8. At the No. 3 position, Lisa Brady (Pickerington/Pickerington North) and Jordan VanWinkle (Vickery/Port Clinton) dropped a  1-8 decision to Alexandra Cummins and Maggie Stewart.

On the singles court, Granstrom was defeated by Miller, 0-6, 0-6, at No. 1. At the No. 2 spot, Jessica VanWinkle lost to Miely, 1-6, 0-6. Reiber was defeated by Cummins, 0-6, 2-6, at No. 4. At No. 5 singles, Brady dropped a 0-6, 2-6 decision to Jackie Stevens. Holly Grady (Beavercreek/Xenia Christian) lost to Stewart at No. 6 singles, 3-6, 1-6.

“Overall, I thought the team worked hard and played well. We will get back to practice and continue to work on improving every day,” Loeffelholz said.
