WESTERVILLE — Wilmington College dropped its Ohio Athletic Conference opener at Otterbein, 8-1, Tuesday. Wilmington head coach Ken Lundy said he was encouraged by what he saw on the courts, despite the loss.

Andrea Gibson

"In some cases we played a little better tonight," Lundy said. "The competition was tougher. Andrea Gibson gained a little confidence even though she lost a tough match and Jen Patrick played her best match of the year."

Wilmington's lone win came from the No. 1 doubles combination of Gibson (Blanchester) and Patrick (Mount Orab/Western Brown), who defeated Kelly Fischer and Sheridan Carr, 8-5. At No. 1 singles, Gibson dropped a 4-6, 5-7 decision to Fischer. Patrick lost to Ashley Tackett, 3-6, 1-6, at No. 2 singles. Sarah Amling (London) dropped her No. 3 singles match to Sheridan Carr, 3-6, 2-6. At No. 4 singles, Elizabeth Amling (London) lost to Lianne Simeone, 6-7 (3-7), 0-6. Debra Stewart (Circleville/Logan Elm) lost at No. 5 singles to Shannon Carr, 3-6, 2-6, and Carolyn Shinsato (Batavia) was defeated at No. 6 singles by Rachel Kerr, 0-6, 0-6.

Wilmington's No. 2 doubles combination of Elizabeth and Sarah Amling dropped a 2-8 decision to Tackett and Shannon Carr. At No. 3 doubles, Stewart and Shinsato lost to Simeone and Kerr, 1-8.

"We've got a long ways to go, but it's getting better. Hopefully, we'll get a win over Miami-Middletown Wednesday," Lundy said. "Then we go to Ohio Dominican, who will be very tough. I think that will prepare us for Saturday's match at Heidelberg, which is a match we need to win. It's a busy week, but I think it's better for them to play some matches. They've had a lot of practice; now it's time to learn to play under the pressure of a match."
