Wilmington College split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with Heidelberg at the WC Softball Complex Saturday afternoon.

The Quakers blasted the Berg, 8-1, in the opener, and Heidelberg evened things with a 4-2 win in game two.

Wilmington — which has split five consecutive doubleheaders — is now 2-2 in the OAC, 11-13 overall. Heidelberg is 1-2 in conference play, 10-8 for the season.

“We came out and played great softball in the first game,” Wilmington head coach Beth Floyd said. “We hit the ball well. We played great defense, and our pitching was outstanding.”

The Quakers scored seven times in the third inning to blow game one wide open. Highlighting the uprising was a grand slam off the bat of Kelsey Becker (Clarksville, Ind.).

The seven-spot was more than enough for Danielle Monnier (Houston), who raised her record to 6-5 with a complete-game six-hitter. Monnier fanned 10 Heidelberg batters.

Brooke Byrne (Wilmington), Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington/Clinton-Massie) and Erika Lee (Blanchester) had two hits each. Wilmington totaled 10 hits on the game, but the Quakers’ defensive play was the secret to winning.

“Our defense has been our strength all year, and it really set the tone early in game one. Kelsey Becker threw out a very good base stealer, and Stacy Lunsford made a great diving catch. We were able to build momentum off our defensive play,” Floyd said.

Lunsford continued to swing a hot stick in game two. The sophomore left fielder tripled in the first and scored on a Catlin Shilling (Waverly) groundout to give Wilmington a 1-0 lead.

After Heidelberg tied things with a second-inning run, Wilmington regained the lead in the third inning when Lunsford singled and came around to score on a Kerri Cunagin (Circleville/Teays Valley) double.

Wilmington stayed in front until Heidelberg plated two runs in the sixth to go up, 3-2. The Berg added an insurance run in the seventh to pick up the win.

Lunsford and Cunagin combined for four of Wilmington’s six hits.

The Quakers will return to action with a home OAC doubleheader against John Carroll on April 6. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
