Brooke Byrne homered in Wilmington's win over Northland College.
FORT MYERS, Fla. — For the second straight day, Wilmington College recovered from a game-one loss to earn a split in Gene Cusic Classic action.
The Quakers lost to Clark College, 8-4, in the opener, and bounced back to rout Northland, 9-0, in game two.
Wilmington is now 2-2 on the early season.
“It was like Sunday — we just struggled early in our first game,” Wilmington head coach Beth Floyd said. “We got off to a bad start and made some mistakes that prevented us from getting back into the game.”
Game two was all Wilmington.
Brooke Byrne (Wilmington) belted a home run and drove in three runs as Wilmington put away Northland.
The Quakers scored four times in the second inning and put a five-spot on the board in the third.
Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington/Clinton-Massie), Brittany Williams (Peebles/Northwest) and Elise Mariner (North Canton/Hoover) contributed two hits apiece.
Jess Clutter (Englewood/Northmont) allowed just three hits in going the distance for her first collegiate win.
“Jess threw the ball well. She is going to have an outstanding career at Wilmington College,” Floyd said.
