Lady Quakers pick up ninth win of season

Zerilla picks up 1,000th career point in win

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College Lady Quakers picked up their ninth win of the 2004-05 season and the 30th of the 2004 calendar year with a 72-58 victory over the Pioneers of Marietta College on Thursday afternoon.

Siobhan Zerilla (Cincinnati/Mercy) scored 13 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, with the 13 points giving her exactly 1,000 for her 101-game career.

The Pioneers brought their “A” game to Fred Raizk Arena, as the teams fought back and forth for the first 15 minutes of the game, before the Lady Quakers opened a 7-0 run en route to a three-point, 28-25 halftime lead.

The Lady Quakers started the second half with a 11-2 run, taking a 12-point lead with 15:33 to play in the contest before the Pioneers chipped away at their deficit, closing to within one with 5:55 before the hosts used a 10-0 run over the next 2:21 to increase the lead to double figures, which grew to as many as 17 on two occasions, ending the game at 14 at 72-58.

Courtney Balser (Pleasant Plain/Little Miami) led the way with a game-high 19 points while Zerilla scored 13 and Erica Smith (Union/Northmont) added 11 in the 14-point win. Zerilla pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, as the Lady Quakers out-rebounded the Pioneers 45-28. Sam Hood (Lockbourne/Teays Valley) and Katie Streck (Dayton/Carroll) each dished out four assists in the win.

Marietta was led by Rebecca Tokodi, who scored 11 points and pulled down nine rebounds while Katie Moriarty scored 10 in the losing effort.

With the win, the Lady Quakers improve to 9-2 on the season and 4-0 in the OAC while Marietta falls to 2-7 on the season and 0-4 in league action.

The next game for the Green and White is on Wednesday, January 5 when the team travels to Ada, Ohio to take on the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
