Lady Quakers win OAC opener

Wilmington, OH (December 7, 2002) ­ The Lady Quakers of Wilmington College won the conference opener with a 83-74 victory over Heidelberg College.

Wilmington (4-1, 1-0 OAC) was led by career highs from Megan Woodruff (New Vienna/East Clinton) and Amy Kincer (Englewood/Northmont) with 31 and 22 points respectively.

Heidelberg (2-2, 0-1 OAC) was led by Katie Fazekas and Heidi Galm who each scored 22 points in the loss.

Heidelberg took of quickly in the game, leading the contest by four just 1:30 into the contest. The Green and White cut into the deficit and even took a three point lead five minutes into the game before the 'Berg scored eight straight points to take a five point lead, their largest of the game. The Lady Quakers responded with a 13-0 run to regain the lead, one that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest. HC came back with a 7-0 run over the next two minutes before WC opened up a six point lead that they took into the locker room.

The Green and White opened the second half out-scoring the visitors from Tiffin 7-3 to open up a double-digit lead in the contest. The ten points would be the teamıs largest lead until the waning moments in the game, as the Lady Quakers lead would float between four and ten points for the majority of the second half. The visitors made a final push with 2:13 left in the game, when they cut the lead to five before the Lady Quakers scored seven straight points to put the game away.

Woodruff scored 31 points, hitting on 11-of-20 field goals while dishing out a game-high five assists. Kincer scored 22 including a perfect seven-of-seven from the free throw line as Tara Rausch (Marysville/Fairbanks) chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds. Siobhan Zerilla (Cincinnat/Mercy) scored just six points but pulled down a game-leading 17 rebounds.

Heidelberg was led by Fazekas and Galm who each scored 22 while Brianna Hartman and Liza Simrell scored 11 and 10 points respectively. Hartman pulled down a team-high seven rebounds while Simrell had three assists to lead the squad.

The next game for the Green and White is set for Saturday, December 14 when the team travels to Berea, Ohio to face off against the Baldwin-Wallace Yellow Jackets for rights to first place in the OAC.
