Lady Quakers withstand late rally for victory
Freshman Katie Streck scores a career-high 16 points in victory

HILLS, Kentucky – The
Wilmington College Lady Quaker basketball team withstood a furious
second-half rally by
the Saints of Thomas More College to pick up a 67-64 victory on
Wednesday evening.
Thomas More got the first points of the game with a jump shot
by Megan Wood, before the Lady Quakers opened a 14-0 run, taking
a 14-2 lead with 11:18 to play in the half. The first half lead
grew to as many as 24 in the half when Siobhan Zerilla (Cincinnati/Mercy)
scored two of her eight first-half points.
In the second half the Saints came out firing, scoring the first
10 points of the period, cutting the deficit to 14. Thomas More
kept clawing away at the Lady Quaker lead, cutting it to as few
as one with 13 seconds left in the game before Sam Hood (Lockbourne/Teays
Valley) knocked down two free throws, taking the lead to three
as a last attempt at a tie was unsuccessful for the hosts.
Freshman Katie Streck (Dayton/Carroll) scored a career-high 16
points in a winning effort for the Lady Quakers as Zerilla scored
14 and Courtney Balser (Pleasant Plain/Little Miami) added a dozen.
Zerilla pulled down a team-leading 12 rebounds while Kara Robinson
(Zanesville/Bishop Rosecrans) grabbed eight. Hood led the team
with four assists in addition to her eight points while Shawna
Thomas (Middletown/Middleton) dished out three assists in her first
collegiate start.
Thomas More was led by Allison Byars who scored a game-high 23
points while Megan Wood pulled down 16 rebounds.
With the win the Lady Quakers improve to 4-1 on the season while
Thomas More falls to 2-4.
The next game for the Green and White is on Saturday, December
4 when the team travels to University Heights to face off against
the Blue Streaks of John Carroll University with tip-off set for
3:00 p.m.
