WILMINGTON,
Ohio If there was a question about how the Wilmington
College Lady Quakers would respond to surrendering 173 points
in two games last weekend, the Wittenberg University Tigers
know the answer. Wilmington held Wittenberg to 27 percent
shooting and thumped the Tigers, 71-53, Wednesday at Fred
Raizk Arena.
"I thought we played pretty well tonight," said WC head coach
Jerry Scheve. "Those people who say that defense wins games
and rebounding wins championships; they know what theyıre
talking about. Weıve stressed that since the weekend, when
we had a very hard time guarding anybody. I think our kids
bought into it the last couple days. Wittenberg didnıt shoot
the ball well, and I think we had something to do with that."
Kelly
Peters (Spencerville/Spencerville) missed her third consecutive
double-double by two rebounds. The junior post scored 19 points,
collected eight rebounds and added three assists. Jackie Hauke
(Sardinia/Whiteoak) scored 13 points on four-of-five shooting
and ripped down seven rebounds. Several of Petersı scores
were assisted by junior point guard Sam Hood (Lockbourne/Teays
Valley), who notched her first double-double of the year,
handing out a season-high 12 assists to go with 10 points.
Hood was nearly flawless, committing just two turnovers in
29 minutes of play.
"Thatıs kind of been her calling card since sheıs been here,"
Scheve said. "Sheıs always been a leader on the court. She
understands what we want done. More and more, the things sheıs
calling before I have a chance to call them are getting to
be the same. Thatıs what youıre looking for out of your point
guard. But her biggest contribution tonight was her defense.
She jammed up so much of what Wittenberg wanted to do just
be listening to the scouting report."
For
Wilmington, the margin of victory was more an issue than the
outcome. The Lady Quakers (4-1) jumped on the Tigers early,
taking a 17-6 lead on a Shawna Thomas (Middletown/Middletown)
layup. Ellie Stonecash hit a pair of free throws to reduce
WCıs lead to 20-12, but the Lady Quakers got a pair of treys
and nine assists from Hood and 13 power points from Peters
to take a 39-26 halftime lead.
Wittenberg
(2-3) cut Wilmingtonıs lead to 11 early in the second half,
but the Lady Quakers scored eight straight points and never
let the lead slip below 14 against a highly regarded team
whose other setbacks were close losses to Ohio Athletic Conference
powers Capital and Baldwin-Wallace.
Thomas
scored eight and pulled down four rebounds for WC while Erica
Smith (Union/Northmont) and Katie Streck (Dayton/Carroll)
scored seven each. Megan Miller, with 10 points, was the lone
Tiger in double figures.
Wilmington
won the battle on the boards, 49-37 after out-rebounding Wittenberg
by just two in the first half.
For
Wilmington, the OAC season begins Saturday with John Carroll
University visiting Fred Raizk Arena for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
"I feel a lot better tonight than I did two nights ago," said
Scheve, referencing the Lady Quakersı 88-75 loss to DePauw
on Sunday. "I donıt want to sound happy to be 4-1, because
we donıt like to lose, but I think weıve improved over the
last couple weeks. "I think we have a little bit better feel
of who needs to be out on the floor. I think weıre still developing
our depth, and thatıs going to improve. Weıre starting off
with some real good teams right off the bat, teams picked
to finish just behind us and just ahead of us (Otterbein).
We just canıt let up. I think we let up just a little bit
last weekend. Hopefully, weıve learned that we canıt do that.
It was obvious to me before this game started tonight that
we were ready to play. It wasnıt that obvious on Sunday."
