Four Lady Quakers score in double figures in 11-point win

WILMINGTON – The Lady Quakers used an balanced scoring attack in defeating the Yellow Jackets of Defiance on Sunday afternoon by a 79-68 score. Four Lady Quakers scored in double figures led by Courtney Balser’s (Pleasant Plain/Little Miami) 16 points. Siobhan Zerilla (Cincinnati/Mercy) added 12 while Jackie Hauke (Sardinia/Whiteoak) and Shawna Thomas (Middletown/Middletown) had career highs with 11 and 10 respectively.

The Lady Quakers got on track early in the game, opening a seven-point lead with 16:18 to play in the half. The lead grew to as many as nine, before the Yellow Jackets clawed back, using a 11-4 run over the final 4:41 of the first half to cut the deficit to two heading into the locker room.

Defiance kept their first half streak heading into the second half, out-scoring the Lady Quakers 12-4 to start the second half, opening a six-point lead just over four minutes into the period. The Green and White fought back, opening a 20-4 run over the next five minutes to take a 10-point lead with 10 minutes to play. Defiance would only get as close as five the rest of the way, as the Green and White cruised to the 11-point win.

Balser, Zerilla, Hauke and Thomas were all in double figures in the scoring column while Kelly Peters (Spencerville/Spencerville) pulled down seven rebounds in addition to her nine points. Zerilla and Katie Streck (Dayton/Carroll) each grabbed five rebounds as Sam Hood (Lockbourne/Teays Valley) dished out nine assists, as 11 of the 12 players that saw action in the game reached the scoring column.

With the win the Lady Quakers improve to 3-1 on the year while Defiance falls to 2-3.

The next game for the Green and White is on Wednesday, December 1 when the team travels to Crestview Hills, Kentucky to face off against the Saints of Thomas More College in the first game of a women’s/men’s double header, starting at 5:30 p.m.
