WILMINGTON,
Ohio Junior Kelly Peters (Spencerville/Spencerville)
recorded career highs in points and rebounds with 24 and 12,
respectively, to lead Wilmington College past Bethany College,
96-85, in first-round action of the Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament
Saturday at Fred Raizk Arena. Wilmington (3-0) will face DePauw
for the tournament title at 4 p.m. Sunday. The Tigers (3-1)
defeated Hanover College, 78-47, in Saturdayıs other first-round
game.
Wilmingtonıs starting quintet of Sam Hood (Lockbourne/Teays
Valley), Jackie Hauke (Sardinia/Whiteoak), Katie Streck (Dayton/Carroll),
Erica Smith (Union/Northmont) and Peters dominated throughout
the game. The Lady Quakers scored the gameıs first seven points
and took a 19-4 lead when sophomore guard Anne Haky (North
Olmsted/Bay Village) came off the bench to nail a three-pointer.
Senior
forward Jenny Place scored six points as Bethany put 10 unanswered
points on the board. The Bison (1-3) created game-long problems
for the Lady Quakers with their slashing moves to the basket.
"Iım
surprised we didnıt guard any better than we did," WC head
coach Jerry Scheve said. "Sometimes when you get ahead, you
want to start taking chances, you donıt want to play solid,
and I think thatıs kind of how we were all night. I thought
we played well in spurts and obviously not real well in spurts.
I just told the kids that Iıve got a lot of confidence in
a lot of players on this team. I think Iıve got to do a better
job of getting the right people out there at the right time.
We just had some real dead spots. Thatıs what the early part
of the season is for to find out who plays well together.
Weıre still searching for that."
Peters
and Streck re-established their inside control, combining
for 12 points, and freshman Natasha Huckleby (Troy/Troy) scored
six as the Lady Quakers expanded their lead to 48-30 at the
half.
The
start of the second half, like the first half, was a clinic
from the Wilmington starters. With Peters and Streck controlling
the paint and Hood and Hauke pushing the tempo, the Lady Quakers
moved the lead to 59-35 when Hood hit a layup. But in a game
muddied by 58 personal fouls, the familiar shrill shriek of
the whistle did what Bethany could not: stop Peters. Peters,
who was not tagged with a foul in the first half, collected
three fouls on successive plays and left the game with 13:15
to play and the Lady Quakers ahead, 63-44. When she returned
two minutes later, the Bison had scored 10 unanswered points
to reduce the WC lead to 63-54.
"There
was absolutely no flow to the game at all, starting with about
five minutes to go in the first half," Scheve said. "It was
one of the games where we just constantly tried to keep telling
our players that they had to make adjustments to the officials,
and our players didnıt, so they continued to get whistled."
Hood
hit a three-pointer and Peters and Streck scored 13 points
over the ensuing 3:30 as Wilmington pulled away to an 80-61
lead. Bethany, led by Place (24 points) and senior guard Renee
Shehady (22 points) kept the Lady Quakers in view, if not
reach, pulling to within nine, 91-82, on a late three from
Shehady.
Streck
finished with 18 points and five rebounds, Hood scored 15
and handed out eight assists while Hauke and Smith scored
nine each. Haky added seven for WC. Wilmingtonıs starting
five connected on 62 percent (28-of-45) of their field goal
attempts, with Peters hitting 10-of-11 shots in a take-charge
performance.
"When
Kelly was on the floor, she wanted the ball the whole time,
and we got her the ball," Scheve said. "Thatıs what this teamıs
got to be about. Sheıs one of our strong points; sheıs difficult
to guard."
The
Lady Quakers earned a spot in the Championship game where
they will face nationally ranked Depauw University. Tip-off
set for 4 p.m.
