Lady Quakers win Damon’s/Wilmington Inn Tournament with 33-point win

Trio of Lady Quakers score in double figures in win

WILMINGTON – The Wilmington College Lady Quakers increased their current win streak to a dozen games with a 33-point victory over the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University in the Championship game of the Damon’s/Wilmington Inn Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday evening.

Ohio Wesleyan started the game in strong fashion, taking a lead off the start and increased it to as many as five with 11:14 to play in the first half. The Lady Quakers hit a pair of three pointers to take a one-point lead, their first of the game with 8:25 to play in the contest. The Bishops took a brief two point lead with 7:14 to play in the contest before the host Quakers opened an 13-0 run giving the hosts an 11-point advantage. The lead grew to as many as 16 when tournament Most Valuable Player Siobhan Zerilla (Cincinnati/Mercy) put in a lay-up with six seconds to go before halftime.

The Lady Quakers came out firing in the second half, opening a 20-point lead that the Bishops could not overcome, crusing to the 33-point win.

Erica Smith (Union/Northmont) scored a game-high 19 points while teammate Courtney Balser (Pleasant Plain/Little Miami) put in 18 while Zerilla scored 11 and pulled down 14 for the second consecutive game. Three Lady Quakers, Zerilla, Sam Hood (Lockbourne/Teays Valley) and Anne Haky (North Olmsted/Bay Village) each dished out a trio of assists. For the game the Lady Quakers out-rebounded Ohio Wesleyan 45-25 and hit 53.6 percent (37-of-69) of their shots in the contest.

Ohio Wesleyan was led by All-Tournament team member Erica Brizendine who scored 18 points while Kelly Heil, also a member of the All-Tournament team was held to nine points after scoring 33 points in the tournament’s first round victory.

With the win the Lady Quakers improve to 2-0 on the year while OWU evens their record at 1-1.

The next game for the Lady Quakers is on Saturday, November 27 when they play host to Kalamazoo College in the first round of the Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament, also featuring Defiance and Whitworth (Wash.).
