Lady Quakers advance to Division III Championship

Team rallies from an 11-point first-half deficit

(WC Press Release) VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia (March 19, 2004) ­The Wilmington College Lady Quakers trailed by 11 points on two separate occasions in the first half before rallying and cutting the deficit to seven by halftime before out-scoring Rochester 46-28 in the second half en route to the 11-point win.

Emily Cummins (Springfield/Northwestern) led four in double figures by pouring in a game-high 21 points. Rochester got on the board first in the game by scoring the first four points, before the Yellowjackets proceeded to open an 11-point, 18-7 lead by the 10:35 mark of the first half.

The Green and White fought back and cut the deficit to as few as five before going into the locker room trailing by seven at 35-28. In the second half Rochester increased their lead to 10 two and a half minutes into the period before the Lady Quakers opened a 7-0 run, cutting the deficit to three.

After four straight points from Rochester increased the lead to seven, the Lady Quakers started chipping away at the Yellowjacket advantage, and took their first lead of the game at the 6:56 mark when freshman post Kara Robinson (Zanesville/Bishop Rosecrans) hit a jumper.

The Lady Quakers never trailed again after that point, ending the game on an 11-3 run, giving the team their first ever NCAA National Championship game berth. Cummins put in 21 points while Amy Kincer (Englewood/Northmont) scored 16, Tara Rausch (Marysville/Fairbanks) scored 15 and Siobhan Zerilla (Cincinnati/Mercy) scored 13.

Zerilla pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds, as the team was out-rebounded by 10, the most lopsided margin of the season for the Green and White. Freshman point guard Sam Hood (Lockbourne/Teays Valley) scored just three points, but pulled down five rebounds and dished out seven assists and giving up no turnovers.

Rochester was led by Erika Smith, who scored 20 points and pulled down a game-high 18 rebounds. Kelly Wescott and Megan Fish each scored 10 in the losing effort for the Yellowjackets.With the win, the Lady Quakers improve to 26-6 on the season while Rochester falls to 24-5.

The next game for the Green and White is tomorrow, where they will face off against Bowdoin, who defeated Wisconsin Stevens-Point 64-59 in the second semi-final of the day.
