Lady Quakers end season with 77-73 defeat to Hope

EAU CLAIRE, Wisconsin ­ (March 15, 2003) ­ The Lady Quakers of Wilmington College ended their 22-game winning streak with a 77-73 loss at the hands of of undefeated Hope College in the "Sweet 16" round of the NCAA Tournament. Megan Woodruff (New Vienna/East Clinton) and Tara Rausch (Marysville/Fairbanks) each scored 16 points in the defeat.

The Lady Quakers found themselves in a 7-0 hole just 1:35 into the game before the Green and White were able to tie the game at 19 with 11 minutes to play in the half. The two teams then went back and forth for the rest of the half until WC went on a 10-4 run to take a five-point halftime lead.

Hope scored the first four points of the second half to close to within one before the Flying Dutch opened a 14-4 run to take a six-point lead, one that they would not give up for the remainder of the game. The Hope lead grew to as many as nine in the period, while the Lady Quakers cut the deficit to three six-times, but were unable to take the lead in the game.

Woodruff and Rausch led the way for Wilmington with 16 points each while Amy Kincer (Englewood/Northmont) scored 15 and Emily Cummins (Springfield/Northwestern) added 12. Siobhan Zerilla (Cincinnati/mercy) scored just seven points but pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds while Woodruff dished out eight assists.

Hopešs Colleen Corey scored a career-high 18 points while Amy Baltmanis scored 14, being the only players to score in double figures for the Flying Dutch. Corey pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds while Baltmanis dished out eight assists.

The loss ends the season for the Green and White, as the team set a school record with the 22-game winning streak, while their 26 victories is the second highest total in school history.
