Lady Quakers advance to round of 16

March 8, 2003 - Wilmington, OH- The Wilmington College Lady Quakers extended their winning streak to 22 games after a 74-63 victory over conference rival Baldwin-Wallace in the second round of the NCAA National Tournament. The win advances WC into the "sweet 16" for the second straight year.

Both the Quakers (26-2) and the Yellow Jackets (25-5) had offensive troubles to start the first half. Wilmington was able to strike first when Megan Woodruff (New Vienna/East Clinton) followed her missed shot and tipped in the rebound. The teams then traded baskets for the next ten minutes until a B-W three-pointer from Stephanne Musser put the visitors ahead 10-12 with 10:11 to go in the first half. The Quakers tied the score at 12 on their next possession and then took the lead, pushing their advantage to six points over the next two minutes. Baldwin-Wallace came back with a run of their own and took a one-point lead with 4:45 showing on the clock. The teams once again went back and forth with Wilmington making a late half run to take a four point lead into halftime, 33-29.

Amy Kincer (Englewood/Northmont) led WC in the first half with 10 points while Natalie Winkelfoos pacing the Yellow Jackets with 15 tallies.

The Quakers kept the momentum going to start out the second half and extended their lead to 10 points, 41-31. After a timeout, B-W went on a 6-0 run, to pull within four. The Lady Quaker defense, however, stood strong and was able to retain the lead. The WC offense then got back on track as the Quakers took and held a double digit lead for the rest of the way for the 11 point win victory.

Wilmington was lead by junior Kincer and senior Woodruff who each dropped in 23 points. Siobhan Zerilla (Cincinnati/Mercy) added 13 points and 10 rebounds. Shari Stauffer (Versailles/Versailles) also pulled down 10 rebounds to go with her six points.

The Yellow-Jackets were lead by three players in double figures. Winkelfoos led the way with 18 with Erika Schultz and Karissa Kusick each netting 10.

The Lady Quaker next game will be on Friday March 14th then they will face Hope College for a chance to advance into the "Elite Eight."
