Lady Quakers use strong first half in eight-point win

(WC Press Release) Ada, Ohio (January 28, 2004) -- The Wilmington College Lady Quakers jumped out to a 42-24 halftime lead and cruised the rest of the way in a 70-62 Ohio Athletic Conference victory, giving WC head coach Jerry Scheve his 250th career victory with the Lady Quakers.

Tara Rausch (Marysville/Fairbanks) led the way with 17 points while Sam Hood (Lockbourne/Teays Valley) scored a career-high 15 points.

The Lady Quakers trailed early in the game, 10-6 with 16:16 to play before the visitors opened a 10-2 run, giving the Green and White a lead that they would not give up for the rest of the game. The Lady Quakers used another run, this one 12-2, to end the half with an 18-point, 42-24 lead.

In the second half the lead grew to as many as 21 a minute into the period, before the Polar Bears used a 15-3 run to cut the Lady Quaker lead to single digits. The closest ONU would come, however, was six points on numerous occasions, as the Green and White picked up the eight point 70-62 win.

Rausch led the team with 17 points while Hood scored 15 and Amy Kincer (Englewood/Northmont) scored 12. Siobhan Zerilla (Cincinnati/Mercy) pulled down 11 rebounds to go with her eight points, while Rausch grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. Hood dished out six assists to lead the squad, while Rausch had two blocks.

The Polar Bears were led by Kendra Bailey who scored 22 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field. Jenny Beane chipped in eight while Jackie O'Flaherty pulled down eight rebounds and Carrie Miller dished out nine assists.

With the win the Lady Quakers improve to 13-4 overall and 9-2 in the OAC while Ohio Northern falls 10-8 and 5-6 in league action.

The next game for the Green and White is on Saturday, January 31 when the team plays host to the Pioneers of Marietta College with tip-off set for 3:00 p.m.
