Lady Quakers upset 8th ranked Crusaders

Ohio – The Wilmington College
Lady Quakers picked up an upset Wednesday evening with a nine-point
victory over eighth
ranked (USA Today/ESPN/WBCA coaches poll) Capital University, by
a 65-58 count.
Senior forward Siobhan Zerilla (Cincinnati/Mercy) recorded a double-double
in the game with a team-high 14 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.
Capital started
the game with a 7-0 run over the game’s
first two minutes, before the Lady Quakers started chipping away,
taking a one-point, 16-15 lead with 8:37 to play in the half. The
first-half lead grew to as many as five before Capital cut the
deficit to three, 31-28 heading into the locker room at halftime.
In the second
half the Lady Quakers stretched their lead to eight with 12:19
to play in the game before the visitors
opened a 9-0
run to take a one-point lead, their last lead of the contest. The
two teams were knotted at 49 with six and a half minutes to play
before the Green and White started to inch their lead, outscoring
the Crusaders 13-2 over the game’s final five minutes.
Zerilla scored
14 while Courtney Balser (Pleasant Plain/Little Miami) added
13 in the victory. Erica Smith (Union/Northmont)
and
Shawna Thomas (Middletown/Middletown) each scored eight for the
victors. Zerilla’s 17 rebound led all players in the game,
as the two teams had 46 rebounds apiece. Sam Hood (Lockbourne/Teays
Valley) dished out five assists for the Quakers.
Sara Heitkamp led three Crusaders in double figures with 17, while
Kati Todd and Jennifer Lilly scored 11 and 10 points respectively.
Lilly pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds in the loss, while Todd
dished out five assists.
With the win, the Lady Quakes improve to 12-3 on the season and
7-1 in the OAC while Capital falls to 11-3 overall and 5-3 in league
play.
The next game for the Green and White is on Saturday, January
22 as the team plays for first place in the OAC with a match-up
with first place Baldwin-Wallace College starting at 3:00 p.m.
