Lady Quakers Get First Taste of Defeat in China
May 12, 2012
SHANGHAI, China — The Lady Quakers have enjoyed a variety of new tastes since arriving in China last weekend, but they got their first taste of defeat in three outings with an 89-40 loss to Shanghai City Basketball Team.
Shanghai is a member of the Women’s China Basketball Association and finished fourth in the league’s national championship last season.
Shanghai was playing its first game ever in their new 7,000-seat arena that was modeled after Houston Toyota Center, home of the NBA’s Houston Rockets.
Former Rockets’ star and Chinese national hero Yao Ming played for the men’s version of this team before coming to the United States.
Bethany Ahrens led the Lady Quakers with nine points and LeAnn Topp scored seven.
“This game was a great experience for our team, playing the first game ever in a brand new beautiful arena against a fully professional team with outstanding players,” Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve said. “Shanghai played pressure defense for 94 feet, and we had trouble handling it. But we got better as the game went on.
“Our kids were really playing on fumes with all that we have been doing, and Shanghai made us pay for every mistake. They had a 6-6 post player and several other 6-foot-plus kids, and we were mainly trying to shut them down inside, and then they turned around and hit 10 3-pointers from the NBA line. Hopefully we can regroup for tomorrow’s game."
