When the prospect of renovating the 40-year-old locker room in Hermann Court that’s shared by the men’s soccer and basketball teams was not in the College’s 2007 plans for capital improvements, soccer coach Bud Lewis led a charge to do it themselves.

The players came from Central America, South America, Africa and the East Coast. The coach was from Germany, by way of the campus library. It was autumn 1959, the end of a decade, the beginning of a new era. Wilmington College’s soccer genesis had arrived.

The most thorough scouring of the Wilmington College soccer record book will not uncover even the slightest mention of Mrs. Chambers. Mrs. Chambers? You know, the elementary teacher from South Jersey who steered little Jon Kriebel directly into goal and indirectly toward WC soccer legend. That Mrs. Chambers.

As a senior soccer player at Wantagh High School on Long Island, N.Y., Gary McCarthy’s dream was to take his talents to Penn State University and perhaps star for the Nittany Lions. The dream did not come true. Instead, McCarthy spent the summer of 1959 leafing through college catalogs stacked in his bedroom.
