Peer Mentor Program

This Student Retention Program connects Upper-Class Students of Color Leaders with Freshmen Students of Color to enhance their assimilation and socialization to the Wilmington College Campus Culture.  The Peer Mentoring Program has been in existence since 2000 and has traditionally enrolled 20 to 30 Freshmen Students of Color as mentees in the program.  For the past 8 years both Peer Mentors and their mentees have become prominent student leaders on the Wilmington College Campus and are often among our most successful graduates.  Peer Mentors are supervised by a Peer Mentoring Committee that recruits, selects, trains, and evaluates the performance of Peer Mentors.

Some of the duties and expectations of  Peer Mentors are as follows: To advise and support two mentees by meeting weekly with them  to discuss their academic and social progress on campus- To help foster a “Cultural Family” on campus by addressing the needs of Freshmen Students of Color-  To Serve as a resource person on campus as well as in the local community- To design and attend on campus and off campus social activities with  mentees- To complete monthly written mentee evaluation forms and to discuss mentee progress with Mentor Supervisors on a bi-monthly basis.

The ultimate goal of the Peer Mentoring Program is to increase the Retention and Graduation Rates of Students of Color at Wilmington College by recruiting successful Upper Class Students of Color to serve as Big Brothers and Big Sisters to members of the incoming Freshmen Class. The Director of Multicultural Affairs serves as Chairperson of the Peer Mentoring Committee which has the primary oversight of this program.
