Positive Discipline in the ClassroomPositive Discipline is an amazingly effective strategy for restoring order and civility to today's turbulent classrooms. Hundreds of schools use its philosophy as a foundation for fostering cooperation, problem-solving skills, and mutual respect in children. Blanch Linton, President of the Video Journal of Education said, "As producers of The Video Journal of Education, we had searched for a powerful discipline program, one that would place the responsibility for behavior with children and give students life skills for dealing with problems. After looking at many programs, we were very excited to discover Positive Discipline in the Classroom. It met our criteria perfectly. We have visited many schools that have implemented Positive Disciple, and it has been our observation that teachers and administrators love it because it works, and students love the empowering influence that Positive Discipline in the Classroom brings to them." $16.95 (By Jane Nelsen, Lynn Lott, & H. Stephen Glenn, 1997.)

Reviving Ophelia, Saving the Selves of Adolescent GirlsPipher wrote this book as an attempt to understand her experiences in therapy with adolescent girls. Many of these girls came into therapy "with serious, even life-threatening problems, such as anorexia or the desire to physically hurt or kill themselves." Other less severe problems such as underachievement in school, moodiness, or constant conflict with their parents were puzzling to Pipher. Many of these adolescent girls were the victims of sexual violence. Girls are living in a different world now. More American adolescent girls suffer depression, eating disorders, addictions and suicide attempts than ever before. Our culture is obsessed with physical appearance. There are escalating levels of sexism and violence, which destroys the self-esteem of these girls. Yet these girls often end up blaming themselves or their families instead of looking at the world around them. SALE! $3.50 (Mary Pipher, Ballantine Books, 1994) |
