Wilmington hosts Hoops for Cure

The Wilmington College women’s basketball team will be looking to extend its winning streak, while also raising funds for the Hoops for Cure initiative. (Game Notes, Live Stats/Audio)

The Lady Quakers, in conjunction with the WC Student Athlete Advisory Committee, will be taking donations throughout the game with the funds going toward cancer research.

As for the game, WC hosts a Heidelberg team that is struggling to find traction after an early winning streak. The Student Princes comes into the game on an eight-game losing streak that started with a loss to Wilmington on December 22. In that meeting, senior Brianna Peters connected on two free throws with two seconds remaining to five WC the 60-59 victory.

Three players – Peters, along with seniors LeAnn Topp and Shelby Kies – reached double figures in the Lady Quakers’ victory.

Overall, Heidelberg has lost 13 of its last 15 since opening the season 3-0.

Junior Kathleen Phillips is leading the Ohio Athletic Conference in scoring with 19.0 points per game. As a team, the Student Princes are seventh in the league with 62.8 points per game. They are last in scoring defense, allowing 69.2 points. Sophomore Paige Ricketts is second on the team with 9.4 points per game.

In the first meeting, Ricketts scored a game-high 20 points with eight rebounds, while Phillips added 14 points and seven boards.

Peters is leading the team in OAC action with 10.9 points per game, and 9.8 points overall. Sophomore Spencer Robles is adding 9.0 in league action, while Topp is going for 9.6 points and 8.0 rebounds against OAC foes.
