The Significance of Water to Human Health and Performance
 
 
Functions of Water:
 
         Water is essential for life -- Second only to Air, the body requires more Water than any other nutrient.
         Water forms the greatest component of the human body, comprising ~60%+% of body weight.
         Lean muscletissuecontains ~73% Water; Adipose (fat) tissue contains ~20% Water.
         Water is the most-versatile medium and solvent for a variety of chemical reactions; without Water, biological processes would cease in a matter of days.
         Water helps carry nutrients throughout the body and helps transport waste products from the body; the body requires a sufficient daily supply of Water to fuel all your internal waste filtration systems.
         Water helps maintain blood volume, regulates body temperature, and participates in metabolic reactions.
         Water is needed in order for the digestive system to break down and digest food (which is where you get Calories for energy and Nutrients for growth and repair), and Water is also necessary for the metabolic breakdown of ATP, a source of cellular energy. 
         Water can increase the efficiency of red blood cells in collecting Oxygen in the lungs.
         Water is the basis for saliva and bile and helps form the lubricant/ cushion (shock-absorber) of joints and the fluid of the eyes and spine.
 
 
Statistics:
 
         75% of all Americans are believed to be chronically dehydrated.
         Lack of Water is believed to be the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
         One of the major causes of headache is lack of sufficient Water.
         A mere 2% drop in body Water can trigger short-term memory loss and trouble with basic math.
         Even mild dehydration can slow down one’s metabolism as much as 3%.
         In 37% of all Americans, the thirst mechanism is often mistaken for hunger.
         Preliminary research from Baylor College of Medicine shows that 8-10 glasses of Water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
         According to a University of Washington study, 1 glass of Water can abate overnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied.
         Drinking 5 glasses of Water daily, according to Seattle's Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and British researchers, can potentially decrease several types of Cancer by 45%-79%.
 
 
Tips:
 
         The debate continues on how much Water we need. Recommendation: decide what’s right for you, pay attention to your body, and drink Water when you are thirsty.
         As a guideline -- the government recommends approximately 70-100 ounces of clean Water every day depending on your body size, and more if you are active or during hot Weather. 
         Additional suggestions -- drink a big glass (16-20 ounces or more) of clean Water when you get up in the morning, and another at least an hour before you go to bed. 
         Take regular Water breaks, and avoid relying on sodas or coffee to provide your fluid needs.
