Burcham, Mozingo, Miller have big days

DELAWARE — Wilmington College opened competition in the Corbiere/Merion Invitational, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University Saturday.

The Quakers are in third place heading into Sunday’s final events. Ohio Wesleyan is atop the team standings.

Victoria Burcham (Urbana) had a monster day with a win in the 100-yard backstroke and a second-place finish in the 200 backstroke.

“Victoria had a great meet. A lot of things are coming together. You can see the learning process, things that we’ve been working on over the last year really falling into place. When that happens, she puts together a good swim,” Breen said.

Katie Mozingo (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) turned in a scoring performance in the 100 butterfly with a time that was more than 1 second faster than her effort at the 2011 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship.

“I was really impressed with her today,” Breen said. “She had a great year in the weight room and has done everything that we’ve asked of her in the pool. She had a nice swim in the 1,000 a couple weeks ago, but her 100 fly today was awesome.”

Liz Miller (Lebanon) also was in late-season form with a swim in the 500 freestyle that bettered her performance at the 2011 OAC Championship.

“That’s incredible. It’s hard to put together a swim like that at this point of the season when we are training so hard and still lifting. She looked great in warm-up and just absolutely popped one. It was a lot of fun to watch,” Breen said.

Competition in the Corbiere/Merion Invitational will resume at 10 a.m. Sunday.
