WILMINGTON – Wednesday’s formula was simple for the Wilmington Lady Quakers – hit the offensive glass and take care of the basketball.

Wilmington grabbed 20 offensive boards, leading to 19 second-chance points, and committed a season-low six turnovers as WC opened its Ohio Athletic Conference slate with a 76-65 victory over Muskingum at Fred Raizk Arena in Hermann Court.

“I don’t think we shot the ball well tonight, but anytime you can get a win without shooting well it’s a plus,” said WC head coach Jerry Scheve. “We did a really good job offensive rebounding and turnovers. Offensive rebounding is something we expect and the lack of turnovers is something we hope to expect.”

Junior Courtney Tucker (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds, six of which were on the offensive end. Senior LeAnn Topp (New Bremen, OH/New Bremen) recorded her second career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four steals and two assists. In addition to her statistical exploits, Topp drew the main defensive assignment on Muskingum leading scorer, Hanna Nelson. While Nelson was able to excess her season rebounding total, she was held eight points under her scoring average.

Despite getting off to fast starts in the first and second halves, WC found itself trailing by one point with nine minutes remaining. The deficit didn’t last long as four different players scored during the pivotal 11-0 run over a six-minute stretch to open up Wilmington’s first double-figure lead of the game.

From there, the Lady Quakers sealed the game from the free throw line by going 7-of-10 down the stretch.

Junior Haley Howard (Uhrichville, OH/New Philadelphia) was her usual steady self as she tallied nine points, six assists, five rebounds and a steal. Sophomore Spencer Robles (Clyde, OH/Clyde) led the team with 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting.

“Haley has been solid all year long,” said Scheve. “It was good to see Shelby (Kies) play with a lot of energy. It will certainly help down the stretch.”

Senior Brianna Peters (Alexandria, KY/Campbell County) was the third player to reach double digits with 13 points. She added three rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Wilmington improves to 5-2 overall, 1-0 in the OAC, while Muskingum falls to 3-4 overall, 0-2 in the OAC.

“1-0 is all I am worried about,” said Scheve. “I am happy to be 1-0. We got on the road and it gets immediately tougher with Marietta. It is always a tough place to play. We have to be better Saturday if we want to win.”

The tip-off at Marietta is slated for 3 p.m. Saturday.
