SPRINGFIELD, OH – It took two overtimes, but nothing could be decided as the Wilmington College women’s soccer team fought to a 1-1 draw Wednesday in non-conference action against Wittenberg.

“I thought it was a tale of two halves,” said head coach Steve Spirk. “We struggled in the first half and fortunately for us, we were able to weather the storm. In the second half, we played much better; were aggressive and physical.”

The difference in the Wilmington attack was evident early on as senior Paij Shelton (Hillsboro, OH/Hillsboro) found the back of the net just three minutes into the second half. It was the first of five shots the Quakers unleashed in the second half.

Wittenberg earned the equalizer late in the second half, scoring one a penalty kick in the 82nd minute.

“We gave the away in critical situations,” said Spirk. “With less than 10 minutes to go, we can’t give the ball away in the midfield or up top. We still have a lot to work on.”

Freshman Grace Hignite (Englewood, OH/Northmont) made five saves in earning the tie, moving her record to 1-1-1.

Wilmington (1-1-1) plays at Charlie Gilhart Field for the first time this season as the Fightin’ Quakers host St. Mary’s (IN) 2 p.m. Saturday.
