BEXLEY — Record-setting performances by Mason Metts and Pat Carroll helped Wilmington College win the Capital Classic Saturday.

The Quakers won the 13-team event with 90 points. The host Crusaders were runners-up with 81.50 points.

“It is what it is. People are preparing their teams for conference, but we got a pretty good butt-kicking at All-Ohio last week. We needed to get everybody’s confidence back before the OAC meet next weekend. I thought some people did that today,” Wilmington head coach Ron Combs said.

Metts (Pomeroy/Meigs) finished second in the shot put with a throw of 53-7 that broke his own school record by more than 2 feet. The effort was the 11th-best in the nation this season and gives Metts a solid shot at qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship.

“That’s a huge throw. He has been really consistent this season. He has been above 50 feet in just about every meet. Hopefully, today will be a confidence-builder for him next week,” Combs said.

Carroll (Cincinnati/Purcell Marian) breezed to a win in the 3,000-meter run. His winning time of 8:54.81 broke Matt Ryan’s 1998 team record.

“That was a good run for Matt Ryan when he set the record, and Pat has been gunning for it for a while. It’s nice to see Pat continue to build his resume' as a distance runner. He’s going to have just about all of the records before he leaves Wilmington,” Combs said.

Alek Erwin (Springfield/Northeastern) won the 1,000-meter run in 2:38.52.

“Alek dominated that event. He ran a little faster than he did at Cedarville. We were hoping that there was going to be more competition for him to run with, but he did a nice job of pushing himself in a race that was all his,” Combs said.

Brad Kline (Circleville) and Rob King (Washington Court House/Miami Trace) finished second and fourth, respectively, in the mile run.
