ADA — Wilmington College dropped a 9-0 decision to Ohio Athletic Conference-leading Ohio Northern on the Polar Bears’ courts Tuesday afternoon.

The Quakers are now 2-5 in the OAC, 3-8 overall. Ohio Northern improves to 8-0 in the conference, 18-5 for the season. The win guarantees the Polar Bears at least a share of the OAC regular-season title.

The match was something of a recent rarity: an outdoor sporting event.

“It was windy, but it was still nice to play the match outdoors,” Wilmington interim head coach Jessie Carmack said.

Ohio Northern took a 3-0 lead by sweeping doubles play. The closest match of the day came at No. 3 doubles, where Jennifer VanWinkle (Vickery/Floyd Central, Ind.) and Holly Grady (Beavercreek/Xenia Christian) dropped a 4-8 decision to Christie Gales and Kelsi Wurm.

“Jennifer and Holly played a good match. They made some nice plays and some nice adjustments during the match,” Carmack said.

ONU completed the shutout by taking six straight singles matches.

Jessica VanWinkle (Vickery/Floyd Central, Ind.) lost to Michelle Tuma at No. 1.

Erin Cane (Springboro) was topped by Carly Olmstead at No. 2 singles.

Michelle Reiber (Jamestown/Greeneview) lost to Emily Mueller at No. 3.

At the No. 4 position, Lisa Brady (Pickerington/Pickerington North) was defeated by Gales.

Grady dropped her No. 5 match to Wurm.

Kaitlyn Lentz (Miamisburg) lost to Lauren Rife at No. 6 singles.

The Quakers will host Heidelberg at 3:30 p.m. Friday in a match that carries OAC Tournament ramifications.
