WESTERVILLE — Wilmington College dropped both ends of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Otterbein University Wednesday afternoon.
The Cardinals edged the Quakers, 6-5, in an eight-inning opener and finished the sweep with an 8-0 win in game two.
Wilmington is now 2-6 in the OAC, 11-17 overall. Otterbein improves to 6-2 in the conference, 19-7 for the season.
Game one was a wild ride.
Otterbein scored two runs in the third inning and two more in the fifth to take what seemed like a commanding 4-0 lead.
Wilmington exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth inning — an uprising that was capped by a pinch-hit two-run double by Kaylee Cox (Prospect/Elgin). When the dust cleared, the Quakers led, 5-4.
Otterbein, though, rallied to tie the game in the seventh inning and scored the game winner in the eighth.
Brooke Byrne (Wilmington) and Kerri Cunagin (Circleville/Teays Valley) combined for four of Wilmington’s nine hits.
Otterbein kept the momentum as game two arrived.
The Cardinals scored three times in the third to go up, 3-0, and sealed the mercy rule win with three more runs in the fifth.
Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington/Clinton-Massie) had two of Wilmington’s four hits.
