FORT MYERS, Fla. — Wilmington dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Fredonia State in Gene Cusic Classic action Friday.

The Blue Devils won the opener, 5-3, and finished the sweep with a 7-5 win over the Quakers.

Wilmington will bring a 3-5 record north to Ohio while Fredonia moves to 2-2.

In the opener, Wilmington sputtered on the mound and at the plate through the first five innings.

The Quakers managed just a pair of singles, and eight walks helped the Blue Devils build a 5-0 lead through five.

Wilmington put three on the board in the sixth inning, with two runs scoring on a Bruce Dunlap (Circleville/Logan) triple.

Fredonia avoided seventh-inning trouble and held on for the win.

Wilmington’s defense provided some highlights as the Quakers turned season-high three double plays against Fredonia.

Defense was not a strength in game two as an error and two wild pitches led to five Fredonia runs — four of which were unearned — in the first inning.

Fredonia stretched its lead to 6-0 before Wilmington scored twice in the home third on the strength of RBI hits from Luke Teeters (Waverly) and Dunlap.

The Blue Devils played giveaway in the Wilmington fifth as an error opened the door for three unearned Quaker runs. Brett McEvoy (Pickerington/Pickerington North) and Roenick Whitney (Goshen) drove in runs as Wilmington cut the deficit to 6-5.

Fredonia plated an insurance run in the sixth, and Kyle Grey slammed the door on Wilmington to pick up his second save of the day.

Dunlap led Wilmington’s 10-hit attack with three knocks. The senior leaves Florida with a .581 batting average, 14 RBI and an .806 slugging percentage.

Austin Newman (Bethel/Bethel-Tate) and Brandon Arehart (Wilmington) ripped two hits each.

Teeters pitched well in relief — the freshman gave up five hits and two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings, and struck out five.
