CINCINNATI — Wilmington College belted five game-two home runs to pound Mount St. Joseph, 16-5, and finish a sweep of the Lions in non-conference action Monday afternoon. The Quakers won the opener, 6-2.

Wilmington is now 16-20 on the season while the Mount drops to 6-29.

“We carried our momentum from a big win at Capital over to today,” Wilmington head coach Beth Floyd said. “We came out and our bats were hot all day. We did a great job from top to bottom in our lineup and just pounded the ball.”

Wilmington’s bats were smoking from the moment the Quakers hit the diamond.

In the opener, Kerri Cunagin (Circleville/Teays Valley) delivered the first of three RBI on the game with a base hit in the first inning to get Wilmington on the board.

Back-to-back doubles from Brooke Byrne (Wilmington) and Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington/Clinton-Massie) got a two-run third inning under way.

Erika Lee (Blanchester) singled to set up an Allie Holstein (Ashville/Teays Valley) run-scoring hit in the sixth.

In the seventh, Lunsford doubled and scored on Cunagin’s third hit of the game. Lee chased home the Quakers’ sixth run with a groundout.

Cunagin led Wilmington’s 11-hit attack with three base hits. Lunsford, Catlin Shilling (Waverly) and Holstein had two hits apiece.

Danielle Monnier (Houston) threw a complete-game five-hitter to even her record at 8-8. The sophomore struck out four.

Game two was a blowout from the first pitch.

Byrne and Lunsford led off the game with back-to-back homers, and the romp was on as the Quakers scored six times on five hits in the opening frame.

Kaylee Cox (Prospect/Elgin) drilled a two-run homer in the second to give Wilmington a 7-0 lead.

Any hopes the Mount had of climbing back into the game were tossed aside when Wilmington scored five more in the third as Byrne belted her second home run of the game — a two-run bomb. Chelsea Morrow (South Vienna/Northeastern) drove in a pair with a single and Cunagin hit her third homer in the last three games.

The Quakers added four more runs in the fifth inning, with Olivia Hutchison providing the highlight with a two-run hit.

Jess Clutter (Englewood/Northmont) went 3 2/3 innings to get her seventh win of the season. The freshman gave up four hits.

Wilmington finished with 15 hits, with Cunagin capping a 6-for-7 day with three hits and four runs scored. Byrne, Cox and Elise Mariner (North Canton/Hoover) had two hits each.

“They are confident and making good pitch selection. They are coming to the plate and seeing the ball very well,” Floyd said.
