Hellwarth wins two races

Alex Fout finished second in the 50 freestyle in Wilmington's loss at Franklin.

FRANKLIN, Ind. — Wilmington College dropped a 117-86 decision to Franklin College in a non-conference dual to in the Grizzlies’ water Saturday afternoon.

The meet came a day after the Quakers returned from a week of training in Florida.

“We got home Friday after a 20-hour bus ride and a week of hard training,” Breen said. “We knew some people were going to be really sore and other people would be able to come out and swim really well — whether it’s confidence or whatever they gained from the week of training. It affects everybody differently, and I knew this would be an interesting meet. We’ve been on a bus for 26 of the last 48 hours, so all in all, I think the kids competed really well.”

Corbin Hellwarth (Celina/Parkway) was in on two wins and should have had a third, Breen said.

“Corbin had a great day of racing. He had his fastest in-season time in the 100 breaststroke and was on our winning 200 medley relay. He was disqualified in the 200 IM on what was just a bad call.”

Hellwarth teamed with Casey Thompson (Liberty Township/Lakota East), Cody Skinner (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) and Dave Heidrich (Xenia/Beavercreek) in the 200 IM.

Thompson also was a winner in the 100 backstroke.

Alex Fout (Westerville) was a close second in the 50 freestyle.

“To the eye, it looked like Alex won that race,” Breen said. “We had some things that didn’t go our way, for whatever reason. But the guys were able to come back and keep racing, which was good.”
