LEXINGTON, Ky. — A win in the 200-yard freestyle relay lifted Wilmington College to a dual meet win over Transylvania University in the Pioneers’ water Saturday afternoon.

The Quakers edged Transy, 64-57, and dropped a dual to Wittenberg, 95-37.

With three races remaining, the writing was on the wall, as both teams knew the end result would be decided by the 200 free relay.

Alex Fout (Westerville), Dave Heidrich (Xenia/Beavercreek), Casey Thompson (Liberty Township/Lakota East) and Matt Bates (Cincinnati/Purcell Marian) got the job down, out-touching Transylvania by 0.13 second.

“That was winning the meet in pretty exciting fashion, but we had a lot of great swims to even get to that point,” Wilmington head coach Trip Breen said. “Corbin Hellwarth had an amazing day today. He won races when he absolutely needed to and stepped up big in all three of his individuals.”

Hellwarth (Celina/Parkway) won the 200 breaststroke and finished second in the 100 breaststroke and individual medley.

“Casey Thompson also had a great meet,” Breen said. “He was on the winning 200 free relay and also had wins against Transylvania in the 100 and 200 backstroke.”

Mason Harris (Westerville/Westerville Central) finished third in the 200 freestyle and came back 10 minutes later to beat Transy in the 200 butterfly.

Fout and Bates went 1-2 in the 50 freestyle to help set up their late-meet heroics.

“The kids raced really well. To have a team step up this early in the season and to not back down against two very good teams is awesome,” Breen said. “It was a different format with different scoring. There was more pressure involved. When you step up on the block and you know you have to win a race to keep alive your team’s chances of winning the meet, it puts pressure on you. Our kids responded to that pressure all day long.”
