MARIETTA — Questions were asked and answers were provided as Wilmington tuned up for next week’s Ohio Athletic Conference Championship at the Marietta Open #3 Friday night.

Wilmington finished third with 139.75 points. Marietta won the 10-team event with 150.75 points.

“We wanted to come to Marietta because this was kind of a low-key meet,” Wilmington head coach Ron Combs said. “We got to compete against teams that we don’t normally see, which was a nice change of pace. We just wanted to generate some confidence in these kids. We are a really young team, and I think tonight was a really good step for us.”

Josh Richardson (Hamilton/North College Hill) continued his solid indoor season with a 7.95 seconds win in the 55-meter hurdles.

Mitch Howard (Germantown/Valley View) crossed the line first in the 500-meter run at 1:08.98.

In the field, Brandon Bruner (Cincinnati/Shroder) won the long jump with an effort of 22-2.50, and Mason Metts (Pomeroy/Meigs) took top honors in the shot put with a season-best throw of 48-11.

Pat Carroll (Cincinnati/Purcell Marian) finished second in the mile run in 4:31,10.

The 4x200 relay team of Kenneth Johnson (Cincinnati/Shroder), Eli Carr (Lakewood), Howard and Nate Godby (Goshen) finished second in 1:36.26.

“We are still trying to get everybody healthy,” Combs said. “We definitely held some people back tonight and we also searched for some different combinations. We were looking for what’s out there, in terms of where we can score points at the conference meet. I think we found some things tonight that will help us in the OAC meet.”
