QHC's Friends in Film Series to Conclude with 'Iron Jawed Angels'
Stars Hilary Swank as Early 20th Century Suffragist

Academy Award-winning actress Hilary Swank stars as a worker for American women’s voting rights in Iron Jawed Angels, the final program in Wilmington College’s Friends in Film winter film series, Thursday (Feb. 11), at 7:30 p.m.
The series, which is sponsored by the Meriam R. Hare Quaker Heritage Center, has consisted of four motion pictures that include portrayals of Quakers — some are accurate depictions while others perpetuate stereotypes or inaccuracies about the Society of Friends.
Iron Jawed Angels is a 2004 film about the American women’s suffrage movement during the 1910s. It was filmed in Virginia and produced by HBO Films. It received a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival.
The film, directed by Katja von Garnier, follows political activists Alice Paul (Swank) and Lucy Burns (Frances O’Connor) as they use peaceful and effective strategies, tactics and dialogues to revolutionize the American feminist movement to grant women the right to vote.
Iron Jawed Angels also stars Angelica Huston and Julia Ormond.
The Quaker Heritage Center gallery features an exhibit associated with the film series theme. In addition to being opening prior to and following the film’s showing, normal gallery hours are weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
