FORT MYERS, Fla. — Pitching dominated as Wilmington College split its third straight doubleheader in Gene Cusic Classic action Tuesday afternoon.

The Quakers (3-3) rallied late to beat Eastern Nazarene, 4-1, in the opener, and fell victim to the no-hit bug in a 2-0 loss to Haverford.

Jess Clutter (Englewood/Northmont) dueled Eastern Nazarene’s Kori Sorensen in game one. Clutter surrendered just one hit, but the hit was a second-inning home run that kept Wilmington in a 1-0 hole as the Quakers came to bat in the seventh.

Kerri Cunagin (Circleville/Teays Valley) tied the game with a bomb to right-center, and the floodgates were about to open.

“Kerri wasn’t feeling well when we got down here last weekend, but she was feeling better today,” Wilmington head coach Beth Floyd said. “She got an opportunity today and came up big. That shot really set the tone for a big inning.”

Olivia Hutchison (Mason) ripped a one-out single, and Wilmington’s small-ball took over. The Quakers forced two Eastern Nazarene errors that led to runs, and Brooke Byrne smashed an RBI double to left.

When the dust cleared, Wilmington led, 4-1.

Clutter retired the Lions in order in the seventh to pick up her second win in three decisions.

Cunagin had two of Wilmington’s five hits in the opener.

Game two was another battle in the circle as Danielle Monnier (Houston) went head-to-head with Haverford’s Claire Fitzgerald.

Monnier gave up just one earned run and fanned eight in seven innings of work, but Fitzgerald went untouched to record a no-hitter.

“I was real proud of our pitchers today, and our opponents pitched the ball well, too. It made for some exciting softball,” Floyd said. “Jess Clutter was outstanding, and I thought Danielle pitched a great game against the best team we’ve played down here so far.”
