DELAWARE – Senior Mason Metts set a new school record and improved his standings for the NCAA meet during the Ohio Wesleyan Last Chance Meet.
With a throw of 193-7, Metts (Pomeroy, OH/Meigs) moved to fifth nationally in setting the new hammer mark. He has also qualified 17th for the NCAA meet in the shot put.
“That is an outstanding throw by Mason in the hammer, increasing the school record he set earlier this year by five feet,” said head coach Ron Combs.
Junior Christian Patterson (Cincinnati, OH/Norwood), who has also qualified for the NCAA meet, won the high jump with a jump of 6-8.25. He has qualified third with a jump of 6-11 earlier this season.
While Patterson and Metts were already solidly entrenched in the national meet, several WC athletes were hoping to reach the qualifying mark in their last attempt. For the men, you have to be ranked in the top 20, and the women must be ranked in the top 22 nationally.
Two women’s athletes – Marissa Bolen (Gibsonburg, OH/Gibsonburg) and Jenna Parlette (Miamisburg, OH/Miamisburg) – were the closest athletes to reaching the NCAA qualifying mark. Bolen, who came into the meet 25th nationally, finished second with a throw of 40-6, however, she wasn’t able to improve on her mark established in the OAC championships.
Parlette won the 10,000 meter run with a time of 37:13.11, but didn’t approve her standing and finished 38th nationally.
Four athletes established new personal bests at the Last Chance meet, and another athlete ran a season-best time.
Jake Sydnor (Batavia, OH/Clermont Northeastern) won the 400 with a personal best 49.18, and also established a personal best in the 200 with a time of 22.38. Chad Hirshauer (Cincinnati, OH/Milford) ran a personal best in the 5K with the time of 16:09.17; Tyler Ahle (Bellefontaine, OH/ Benjamin Logan) ran a personal best in the 800 with the time of 2:05.31; and Brad Kline (Circleville, OH/Circleville) set a personal best with a time of 9:50.50 in the steeplechase.
Jake Simpkins (Germantown, OH/Valley View) established a season best in the 800 with the time of 1:56.66.
