Metts, Patterson close WC indoor season
Metts narrowly misses NCAA meet

Mason Metts fired the shot 50-6 at the Mount Union Last Chance Qualifier.
ALLIANCE — Wilmington College’s indoor track and field season concluded at the Mount Union Last Chance Qualifier Saturday.
Mason Metts finished fifth in the shot put with a best effort of 50-6. Metts needed to improve upon his season-best throw of 53-7 to guarantee a sport in next weekend’s NCAA Championship.
Not qualifying for the national meet should not define the junior’s season, WC head coach Ron Combs said.
“Mason has been so consistent. He hasn’t had a down meet,” Combs said. “He went over 49 feet one time last year, and he hasn’t been below 50 feet in a meet since mid-January. He has worked really hard and climbed into a different category of thrower. He was a good thrower — and now is becoming a great thrower. It’s fun to watch that transition happen.”
Christian Patterson (Cincinnati/Norwood) made his first track and field appearance a week after his basketball campaign came to end. The sophomore cleared 6-5 to finish second at Mount Union.
“Christian is a very talented jumper. We expect him to have another big outdoor season,” Combs said.
