MARIETTA – The Wilmington College men’s soccer team took sole possession of second place in the Ohio Athletic Conference with a 3-0 victory over Marietta Saturday in OAC action. The victory allows Wilmington to set up pivotal games to end the season.

The Quakers (10-5-1 overall, 5-1-1 OAC) will travel to Ohio Northern 4 p.m. Wednesday and then will host John Carroll 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The Polar Bears are unbeaten in the OAC, while the Blue Streaks are right behind the Quakers at 4-1-2.

It didn’t take long for Wilmington to claim the lead as freshman Marcus Torbjornsson (Langas, Sweden) scored just 2:10 seconds into the game. Torbjornsson took a feed from junior Dan Wicks (Cincinnati, OH/Reading) and was able to toe poke the ball to the far post past the charging goal keeper. It was Wicks’ team-leading fourth assist.

“It was a good win for us,” said WC head coach Bud Lewis. “We got started early, but we missed some chances to really bury this team. We had so many scoring chances.”

In fact, Wilmington took seven corner kicks in the first half alone, and the Quakers have been effective all season with their set pieces. Their danger showed its face in the 63rd minute as junior Henrik Hornaess (Brumunddal, Norway/Hamar Katerdralskole) served a corner kick that was headed home by sophomore Drew Fields (Terrace Park, OH/Mariemont).

Moments later Wicks scored his fourth goal of the season giving Wilmington more breathing room in the 66th minute.

Junior Antonio Trujillo (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) registered four saves in a little more than 76 minutes between the pipes.

“Antonio made a couple key saves in the second half to keep the shutout,” said Lewis.
