Dwight Johnson was named Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week today.
AUSTINTOWN – Wilmington College sophomore Dwight Johnson has been named Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week, for the week ending January 13, the league announced today (January 14, 2012).
Johnson (Dayton, OH/Jefferson) helped the Fightin’ Quakers to back-to-back OAC victories over Otterbein and Mount Union. For the week, he averaged 23 points, 4.5 assists and four rebounds.
“Dwight is growing as a player,” Hunt said after the Mount Union win. “I thought he was tremendous tonight. He made a couple of big shots. When you play 41 minutes with six assists and no turnovers that is a tremendous day for a point guard. I thought they really couldn’t guard him. We saw throughout the game his penetration and ability to break down the defense was key to us having success on the offensive end.”
It was a career week for the sophomore point guard. He set a career-high with 22 points in the Otterbein win, and then re-established his scoring mark by dropping 24 on Mount Union in Wilmington’s double-overtime thriller.
His scoring, and leadership, was paramount in the victory over the Purple Raiders as Wilmington played the end of the first overtime and all of the second overtime without its top two scorers. In addition to his career-high 24 points, Johnson added six assists, three rebounds and zero turnovers.
He is the first Wilmington men’s basketball player since Antonio Bowman won the honors on January 3, 2011 to earn the league’s weekly distinction.
Wilmington (7-8 overall, 4-4 OAC) will host Ohio Northern 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
