ADA, OH – Junior Malcolm Heard II turned in his best performance of the season, but it wasn’t enough as Wilmington fell to Ohio Northern, 79-75, Wednesday in Ohio Athletic Conference action at the ONU Sports Center.

“They outplayed us from start to finish,” said head coach K.C. Hunt. “We didn’t compete hard enough to win an OAC game.”

Heard (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) scored a season-high 34 points and tied a career-high with 15 rebounds. It was his seventh double-double of the season, and his third straight. It was also the first time he scored at least 30 points in a game this season.

Wilmington allowed the Polar Bears to shoot 60 percent from the field, included 62.5 percent in the second half.
Ohio Northern built a 12-point lead with 12:58 remaining, but back-to-back three-pointers from Heard and junior Klarke Ransome (Richwood, OH/North Union), along with a basket from sophomore Dwight Johnson (Dayton, OH/Jefferson) pulled WC to within four.

However, the Polar Bears continued to make shots to hold Wilmington at bay.

But, the Fightin’ Quakers had one last gasp in them. Baskets on consecutive trips by Heard pulled Wilmington to within two and WC had a chance to pull even with 38 seconds remaining. However, Heard hit just one of two from the foul line.

Trailing by three with 15 seconds remaining, junior Jordan Berlin (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) missed the potential tying three-pointer.

Ransome and Berlin added nine points for the Quakers (12-12 overall, 9-8 OAC).

With one game remaining, the Fightin’ Quakers remain tied with Mount Union at 9-8 for the third and fourth seeds in the OAC tournament. The two teams meet 3 p.m. Saturday in Alliance. John Carroll and Ohio Northern are still in contention for a tournament bye. Ohio Northern travels to OAC leader Capital, while John Carroll host second place Marietta Saturday.
