UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH – Senior Brandon Candella and junior Malcolm Heard II accounted for 61 percent of the Wilmington offense as the Quakers snapped a four-game losing streak with the 70-66 victory over John Carroll Saturday in Ohio Athletic Conference action.

Heard (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) scored a season-high 23 points with 11 rebounds, seven offensive, for his second double-double of the season. Candella (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) added a season-high 20 points and 10 rebounds to register his first double-double of the year. Coming into the contest, the duo was scoring 41 percent of the team’s points.

Wilmington led for 37 of the game’s 40 minutes in improving to 5-8 overall and 2-4 in the OAC.

“We accomplished the three things we wanted to do,” said Wilmington head coach K.C. Hunt. “We rebounded it, slowed them down in transition and took care of the ball.”

The Fightin’ Quakers held John Carroll to just two fast break and five second-chance points. Additionally, WC committed just 16 turnovers, one off its season average. Wilmington’s biggest edge was on the offensive glass as the Quakers scored 19 second-chance points.

Four different players scored as Wilmington went on a 10-2 spurt late in the first half to take its first double-figure lead of the game, and they took a 10-point advantage into the locker room.

John Carroll scored the first seven points of the second half to trim Wilmington’s lead to three, but the Fightin’ Quakers never relinquish its hold on the lead. Seemingly every time the Blue Streaks pulled to within one possession, WC answered with a basket.

The lead ballooned to 10 points again with 1:43 left, however, the host JCU didn’t go away quietly. The Blue Streaks came into the game averaging 8.5 made three-pointers per game, and with 103 seconds left in the game – they converted just two. In those waning moments of the contest, JCU made three and Wilmington struggled at the line.

Wilmington was just 3-of-6 from the free throw line, but was able to maintain its lead to record the win.

Sophomore Dwight Johnson (Dayton, OH/Jefferson) and junior Klarke Ransome (Richwood, OH/North Union) added eight points, while Johnson chipped in with five rebounds and a team-high four assists.
