February Features Host of Black History Month Events
Theme is 'Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future'

Black History Month at Wilmington College will be observed with a host of programs, field trips and activities highlighting the theme “Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future.”
A number of the events are open to the public while several are designed especially for WC students. (See Black History Month schedule)
The month opens Thursday (Feb. 4) with a presentation on “The Significance of Black History for Black Youth” by WC alumnus and former Quakers basketball player Ricardo Hamilton at 7 p.m. in the McCoy Room of Kelly Center.
Art Brooks, director of multicultural affairs, will speak on “My People Have Come This Far by Faith” at the College’s weekly worship service Feb. 10, from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m., in the T. Canby Jones Meetinghouse.
On Feb. 12, a Black History Month Luncheon will feature a panel discussion on “Leaving Your Legacy as a Black College Student,” from 11:30 a.m. to 12:50 p.m., in Pyle Center Rooms C&D. Those attending can purchase their lunch in the adjacent Student Dining Hall.
Black History Month continues Feb. 18 when a motion picture related to the theme “Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future” will be shown at 7 p.m., followed by discussion, in Pyle Center Rooms C&D.
Always a highlight, the annual African Village presentation by students will feature music, dance, poetry, food and a keynote speaker Feb. 22, at 7:30 p.m., in the Top of Pyle Center. The event is sponsored by the Black Student Initiative organization.
Other Black History Month activities designed especially for WC students include a field trip to the African-American Cultural and Historical Museum in Wilberforce, attending Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park Theatre’s production of Walter Mosley’s The Fall of Heaven and a luncheon featuring speaker Mark Hampton, president of FTL Leadership Group in Columbus.
