CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. — Errors proved costly as Wilmington College dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at Thomas More Wednesday afternoon.

Thomas More won the opener, 3-2, and took game two, 7-6.

The Quakers are now 6-6 on the season while Thomas More moves to 9-3.

In game one, Wilmington took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Brooke Byrne (Wilmington) singled and came home on a Kerri Cunagin (Circleville/Teays Valley) base hit.

Wilmington stayed in front until the Saints scored three runs in the home fifth.

Catlin Shilling (Waverly) opened the seventh with a double, and pinch runner Kaci Locke (Nashport/Licking Valley) scored on an Allie Holstein (Ashville/Teays Valley) groundout. Thomas More avoided further trouble and held on for the win.

Wilmington’s sticks made some noise in game two.

After falling behind, 2-0, early, the Quakers scored two runs in the third inning and four more in the fifth.

Holstein and Byrne were in the middle of both rallies with hits and runs scored. Freshman pitcher Jess Clutter (Englewood/Northmont) delivered a three-run double in the fifth.

Thomas More cut the deficit to 6-4 with two runs in the sixth inning. The Saints pulled within 6-5 in the seventh and plated the game-winning runs on a two-out error. Clutter was charged with all seven Thomas More runs, four of which were of the unearned variety.

“We played outstanding defense in the first game, but made too many mistakes to beat a team the quality of Thomas More in the second,” Wilmington head coach Beth Floyd said. “I did like the way we hit the ball. We executed at the plate and did a nice job of getting runners on, over and in.”

Byrne and Holstein had three hits apiece in game two.

Wilmington will host Spalding in a non-conference doubleheader that will get under way at 1 p.m. Saturday.
