College-Community Theatre Sets 'Evita' Auditions for May 23-25

Andrew Lloyd Webber Classic to Feature Large, Multigenerational Cast

May 4, 2010

Auditions will be held May 23, 24 and 25 for Wilmington College-Community Summer Theatre’s production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s dynamic musical Evita.

Actress, politician, mistress, wife, philanthropist, thief, devil or saint, regardless of the label, there is little doubt that Eva Duarte Peron (1919-1952) holds a place as one of the most glamorous and dynamic women of the 20th century, said director Steven Haines.

Her story as told by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber remains one that fascinates with its mixture of truth, myth, political and social “blind ambition,” iconic imagery, intrigues and bizarre speculation, he said.

The show will run July 15, 16, 17 22, 23 and 24, at 7:30 p.m. in WC’s Hugh Heiland Theatre in Boyd Cultural Arts Center.

Haines has planned four rounds of auditions to cast the many roles and ensembles necessary for the show. He said the show requires a “relatively large and multigenerational” cast. All roles feature singing, as there is no spoken dialogue in the show. Solo and ensemble opportunities also are available.

Auditions will be held on the stage of Heiland Theatre on Sunday, May 23, at 2 and 7:15 p.m.; Monday, May 24, at 7:15 p.m.; and Tuesday, May 25; at 7:15 p.m. Persons auditioning must be 14 years of age or older.

Each audition session will begin with the teaching of music from the show and some ensemble singing. However, everyone auditioning also will be expected to have prepared 16 to 24 bars of an Andrew Lloyd Webber song from any of his shows. An accompanist will be provided. A cappella singing or the use of taped accompaniment is not permitted.

“Boisterous and contemplative, epic and intimate, Evita is a piece of theatrical craftsmanship from the minds of one of the most inventive, if short lived, compositional partnerships of the 20th century,” Haines said.

“The Wilmington College Community Summer Theatre encourages anyone interested to show up, try out, and get involved in what promises to be the entertainment event of the summer!”
