Cleaver dazzles in losses
April 20, 2013
BEXLEY, OH – Freshman Clay Cleaver was dazzling on the mound and at the plate Saturday for Wilmington, however, the Quakers couldn’t make enough plays and were swept in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader by Capital. The Quakers were shutout 6-0 in the opener and fell 3-2 in the second game.
Cleaver (Pleasant Plain, OH/Little Miami) was 2-for-4 at the plate in the second game, while allowing just three runs (two earned) on four hits over 6 2/3 innings. The freshman was in the middle of Wilmington’s scoring rally in the sixth. Cleaver started the frame with a single, moved to second on a groundout and to third as junior Brandon Arehart (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) reached on an error.
Senior Hunter Justus (Circleville, OH/Circleville) doubled home Cleaver, and Arehart scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Justus finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate.
Cleaver took a one-hitter into the seventh inning but the Crusaders used three hits in the seventh to take the lead. Capital scored in the fourth inning without the use of a hit to take the lead in the nightcap.
Five different players recorded hits in the opener for Wilmington, but CU scored four runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth for all of the scoring.
Justus (1-7) was saddled with the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits in six innings of work.
