Pat Carroll’s school-record performance helped Wilmington College to a seventh-place finish in the Wilmington College Fall Classic Friday afternoon.

The Quakers finished with 233 points. University of Findlay won the 26-team event with 78 points.

Carroll (Cincinnati/Purcell Marian) made the most of his final home race by covering the 8K course in 25:25.85 to finish fifth overall and shave nearly 4 seconds off Derrick Jackson’s previous team record, set in 2000.

“I couldn’t have planned it any better,” said Carroll, whose effort took nearly a minute off his previous personal best. “I went through the mile comfortably under 5 minutes, so I knew something good could happen. It was awesome. When I hit three miles in 15:10, I scared myself. I just kept thinking, ‘Don’t slip in the woods.’ I followed the race plan and turned it on in the pasture.”

Wilmington head coach Ron Combs said he saw Carroll’s effort coming.

“It was a monster run and I knew on Tuesday that he was going to run fast today,” Combs said. “He had been showing signs of this, but I don’t think he’s run his best race yet.”

Brad Kline (Circleville) finished 22nd in 26:20.

Alek Erwin (South Vienna/Northeastern) was 49th among collegiate runners, finishing in 27:04.

Rob King (Washington Court House/Miami Trace) was under the weather but still finished 57th in 27:08

Jacob Boehm (Blanchester/McNicholas) finished 100th in 28:07.

“Our men’s team needed a great performance from everybody,” Combs said. “Myles Corcoran was sick and did not run, so we needed people to step up. We had several people step up with PR’s. It was a great race.”

Denison University’s Dee Salukombo won the race in a course record time of 24:33.05.
