Pat Carroll broke his own 5,000-meter run team record at the Golden Flash Gala.
KENT — Pat Carroll opened the indoor track and field season with a record-breaking performance at Kent State University’s Golden Flash Gala Friday afternoon.
Carroll (Cincinnati/Purcell Marian) finished 16th in a field filled with scholarship athletes and broke his own 5,000-meter run team record by more than 3 seconds with a time of 15:33.52.
“Pat had a great race. We’re four weeks past conference cross country meet, so we’re kind of hanging on to cross country a little bit,” Wilmington head coach Ron Combs said. “Pat was definitely relying on his experience tonight because he is not at peak fitness at this point. But we don’t have to worry about getting him qualified for the conference meet, which is important. Now, we can just train for the conference meet.”
Sam Nieves (Lakewood) finished 32nd overall with a time of 17:04.98.
“There were some very good Division I and Division II runners here,” Combs said. “Our kids handled the competition well. They didn’t seem too nervous. They just went out and raced hard. I like that because in this environment, they can get caught up in everything. They handled it well.”
