AUSTINTOWN — Wilmington College senior Pat Carroll has been named the Ohio Athletic Conference Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week, the league office announced today.

The weekly conference award is the first for Carroll, who was an All-OAC Second Team performer in 2010.

Carroll (Cincinnati/Purcell Marian) broke his own team 4K record at the Dickinson Long-Short Invitational Saturday. Carroll covered the course in 12:51, 3 seconds faster than his previous mark set at Dickinson in 2010.

“I was very impressed with Pat’s race on Saturday,” Wilmington head coach Ron Combs said. “This year we were at a different course that was very muddy and much tougher than last year’s course and Pat was still able to run faster than he did last year.”

Combs said Carroll’s success this season was preceded by a summer of commitment.

“Pat has gotten off to a really strong start this season,” Combs said. “He was so focused this summer with his training, even though he was studying in Honduras, and now it is paying off.”

While Carroll is contributing big numbers on the course every weekend, he makes equally significant contributions leading up to race days.

“Pat has really accepted the leadership role on our men’s team,” Combs said. “He is doing an outstanding job setting the tone in both training and racing for a team that has a lot of young athletes.”
